I always take my camera with me on our holidays. Recently we took a break and flew down to Sydney so Jade could run the City2Surf and then explore Sydney and its surrounds during the following week.

I enjoy making timelapses and I was on the lookout for locations that would make a great timelapse subject. The first place we stayed had a decent city view so I took the opportunity to capture a day into night sequence. I had to work out my exposure settings on the first night that would work at night and try for the timelapse the following evening. I think it turned out pretty well but you can see for yourself in the video.

Check out the short time-lapse video.

Anyway, there were a few happy snaps from the trip that I’ve included in the galleries below. It’s nothing to do with what I usually post but check them out if it interests you!

Tilt Time-Lapse Fun! https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/05/22/tilt-time-lapse-fun/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/05/22/tilt-time-lapse-fun/#respond Tue, 21 May 2024 21:30:57 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=5497

My barely one-year-old camera came out second best in an altercation between it, my toddler and the coffee table. Over a period of a few months it eventually succumbed to its injuries and just didn’t want to work any more.

The quote to fix it was almost as much as buying a new camera, so I ended up buying a second hand Nikon with about the same specs so I could still use Nikon specific lenses and other hardware with it. The camera I bought came with four batteries, which aren’t cheap, a memory card and a tilt lens.

Check out the short tilt time-lapse video.

If you aren’t familiar with a tilt lens, or tilt-shift as most of them are, they are simply able to tilt away from being parallel to the camera sensor, which makes the plane of focus diagonal and creates out of focus areas along the top and bottom of the frame. I’d seen timelapses made with these types of lenses before and the miniature effect they achieve looks really interesting.

I’d been itching to give it a go and took the camera on a practice run around Brisbane river where I was able to get familiar with how to use it. The results were nothing to write home (or a blog) about but helped me to understand what would make a decent subject.

It all had to do with the vantage point. Being a 50mm lens, it’s quite zoomed in compared to what I was used to with the 16-50mm kit lens. So I knew I needed to be high up and reasonably far away from the subject of the time-lapse.

Conveniently, we decided to take a little trip up to Caloundra for a few nights away, and Jade had booked a hi-rise apartment for us to stay in. This meant that I could set the camera on the balcony and not worry about it while it did its time-interval thing, and luckily for me, the balcony overlooked the park across the street at the entrance to the beach, which allowed a few different scenes to choose from.

I’m reasonably happy with how it came out, but I still think there’s some room for improvement. It seems that having it look good in the viewfinder doesn’t necessarily guarantee great shots but it is a starting point for future tilt-lapses. So hopefully you’ll enjoy looking at the short one-minute video and if you’re into tilt-shift, let me know what I can do to improve my next attempts.

See ya later!

5000 Downloads on Printables.com! https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/03/13/5000-downloads-on-printables-com/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/03/13/5000-downloads-on-printables-com/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 21:30:57 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=5422

Just yesterday we ticked over 5000 downloads from our Printables.com profile! It feels nice that people are finding our designs so useful and we thank everyone who has left a five star review.

Take a look at our profile and see what people have said about our models. It’s always fun to see one of them 3D printed by someone half-way around the world.

Our most downloaded model is the extended caulking nozzle I produced out of need while renovating our bathroom. It was handy when I needed to put a bead of silicon behind the benchtop basin.

Thanks again to everyone for your support!

Building A Pirate Treasure Chest For My Son https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/01/17/building-a-pirate-treasure-chest-for-my-son/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2024/01/17/building-a-pirate-treasure-chest-for-my-son/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2024 21:30:08 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=5346

I had the idea to build a treasure chest for Emmet months ago before the shed was even built. Leading up to the Christmas break, I thought I had plenty of time to get it done but then the renovation project came up, where Jade had decided to take a week off work so we could make a start on it. I managed to get the treasure chest done though, getting the final coat of oil on it the day before we were due to leave to spend Christmas with my family.

I’m quite proud of this one, and I hope when he’s older, Emmet will be proud of me too. I put a lot of work into designing and building the chest and I hope it comes across that way when you watch the video.

If you think I did alright and would like to make a treasure chest for yourself of a loved one, I’ve made the fabrication drawings available on our online store for a couple of bucks. Check out the link below if you’re interested in grabbing a copy! We really appreciate your support!

Make Your Own Triple 4K Wallpaper In Blender! https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/09/20/make-your-own-triple-4k-wallpaper-in-blender/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/09/20/make-your-own-triple-4k-wallpaper-in-blender/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2023 21:30:09 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=4989

I’ve really been enjoying creating content for YouTube using Blender lately. A few weeks ago I uploaded some wallpapers I made for my triple screen displays so that anyone could enjoy them. Making them inspired the idea to create a tutorial on how to make them yourself so that the viewer could easily play around with the scene and produce whatever they wanted with the free assets provided.

So at last, on Friday the tutorial video was uploaded to YouTube for all to watch and hopefully enjoy. If you watched the video, please let me know what you thought of it. I’m keen to create the best content I can and have limited feedback on what I’ve made so far.

I’m trying to move into more of the DIY style content at this stage but there will still be some CAD and Blender elements to the videos.

Check out the link from our YouTube channel

If you want to follow along with the tutorial, you’ll need to download the free asset pack I made for it. Click the button to go to the download page!

If you ain’t got time for that, click the image above to download a free triple 4K wallpaper I prepared earlier!

If you haven’t yet, check out our previous videos where we make the logo in Fusion 360 and then animate the logo in Blender. They’re both great tutorials for beginners in 3D modelling and animation.

Designing Our Logo In Fusion 360 https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/08/02/designing-our-logo-in-fusion-360/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/08/02/designing-our-logo-in-fusion-360/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2023 21:30:38 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=4590

This week we’ve uploaded a video where you can learn how to use the text function and render a logo in Autodesk Fusion 360. You may find inspiration for your own logo and realize the versatility of using text in 3D modeling.

Stay tuned for the next installment where we export the 3D model to Blender to really amp up the rendering!

July 2023 – New Website Launch! https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/07/12/july-2023-new-website-launch/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/07/12/july-2023-new-website-launch/#comments Tue, 11 Jul 2023 21:30:13 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=3985

We’ve been working in the background to create a website more inline with the long-term plans of the business. This week it has gone live and I’m sifting through all of my linked places to redirect web traffic to the new site. I’m very excited to start showing it off to whoever wants to take a look.

The main page is meant to showcase our work and be a directory to the various branches of the business, both current and upcoming. Since I’ve decided to devote more time to the YouTube channel, this will be the main focus moving forward. The old lannix3d.com.au site will remain active for occasional CAD and 3D printing jobs should people demand them.

So take a look around and if you like what you see, subscribe to the YouTube channel to keep abreast of all the goings-on around here. I’m planning to upload hopefully around every two weeks or so, or when my son allows me the time to make videos!

Thanks so much for your support!

The welcome page to our new website.

This week we’re proud to announce that we’ve had over 3000 downloads of our original 3D model designs on Printables.com.

For those unfamiliar with Printables, it is a website that allows users to upload their original creations for others to download and 3D print for themselves. The website is hosted by Prusa Research, the company that sells the ever reliable i3 MK3S that we use for our 3D printing jobs. Their 3D printers are well known among enthusiasts and professionals and are considered the workhorse that stands up to constant use.

Please check out our bio on the Printables site and try out some of our designs if you have your own 3D printer.

Emmet’s Room Sign https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/06/28/emmets-room-sign/ https://lannixdesign.com.au/2023/06/28/emmets-room-sign/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2023 21:30:38 +0000 https://lannixdesign.com.au/?p=3711

When my son was born it was the best thing that had ever happened to me. He inspires me to keep going with my work in the hope that I’ll make him proud to be my son.

A fun little project I decided to build was a bedroom door sign for him inspired by the Back To The Future movies. I’d been experimenting with colour changing 3D printing and since I already had the colours it was a no-brainer. Being a more artistic style 3D model it presented some challenges and required the use of Blender to post-process before printing but overall it was an enjoyable project.

I made a YouTube short that skimmed over the process of making the sign so check it out if you’re interested.

EDIT: I’ve entered the model in the ‘Typography Fun!’ competition on Printables.com. Click the Printables logo below to take a look at the model on their site and download if your named Emmet or know someone with the name!

Mum, Dad and baby boy are all sick this week. I had planned a story on creating 3D printed parts for window hardware but that’ll have to wait til we’re feeling better.

In the meantime, check out this video of babies being delightful. It’s my son’s favourite!

Bye! *Cough, cough…
